Refinery Chemical Cleaning & Hydrocarbon Decontamination

Service Overview

Restoring Process Equipment for Safe Maintenance and Reliable Operation

Refinery process equipment can accumulate hydrocarbons, oil, grease, sludge, heavy organic deposits, coke, wax, and other process residues during normal operation. Over time, these contaminants can affect equipment performance, restrict flow paths, interfere with inspection activities, and create additional hazards during maintenance. Effective cleaning and decontamination are therefore essential to prepare contaminated systems and equipment for inspection, maintenance, repair, modification, and safe return to service.

Excel Tech provides engineered chemical cleaning and hydrocarbon decontamination services for refinery process equipment, vessels, tanks, heat exchangers, pipelines, process piping, and associated systems. Our cleaning programs are developed around the specific requirements of each application, taking into consideration equipment configuration, contaminant characteristics, metallurgy, operating conditions, accessibility, environmental requirements, and the required cleaning outcome.

Hydrocarbon contamination can vary significantly depending on the process and equipment history. Light hydrocarbon residues may be relatively easy to mobilize, while heavier deposits can become strongly adhered to internal surfaces and may require specialized treatment. Our approach is designed to identify the nature and extent of contamination and select an appropriate cleaning methodology to achieve effective removal while considering equipment integrity and operational requirements.

Depending on the application, appropriate cleaning techniques may include vapor-phase treatment, liquid-phase circulation, chemical circulation, boil-out, spray cleaning, foam cleaning, flushing, and other engineered cleaning methods. These techniques can be applied individually or in combination to address complex contamination conditions and improve overall cleaning effectiveness.

Vapor-phase cleaning can be used where controlled treatment of hydrocarbon-contaminated equipment is required, helping to mobilize and remove residues from internal surfaces and difficult-to-access areas. Liquid-phase cleaning and circulation methods can provide effective contact with contaminated piping and equipment surfaces, allowing selected cleaning solutions to penetrate and mobilize accumulated deposits.

For suitable applications, boil-out and spray cleaning techniques can be used to treat vessels, tanks, process equipment, and internal surfaces where direct chemical contact is required. Foam-based cleaning may also be considered for applications where extended contact time and controlled distribution of the cleaning solution can support the removal of hydrocarbon residues.

Our engineered cleaning programs can also incorporate flushing, rinsing, neutralization, and other supporting steps as required by the project. The cleaning
